Discover some of the most unique food festival happening in Italy!
All year round, but especially in summer and early autumn, Italian towns and villages come alive with one of the most authentic and joyful traditions: food festivals (=sagre).
Each community celebrates its own specialty, transforming the main square into a lively stage filled with food stalls, long tables, music, and dancing. This is where the essence of Italy reveals itself: the joy of eating together, celebrating local traditions, and sharing pride in the flavors and products that make each place unique and that taste like home.
Let’s explore a few of the most famous and special!
Pit cheese of Rubicone
Every November, in the town of Sogliano al Rubicone in Emilia-Romagna (central Italy), a centuries-old ritual takes place: wheels of cheese are unearthed from pits dug into the tuff rock. This tradition dates back to the 14th century, when farmers hid their cheese underground to protect it from raids. Stored in hay and cereals from August to November, the cheese developed distinctive aromas and unique flavors.
Over time, what was once a necessity became a culinary treasure. In the last fifty years, this cheese, now recognized as a PDO product, has been celebrated with a lively food festival, featuring tastings, dishes, and plenty of opportunities to savor one of Italy’s most extraordinary cheeses.
Feast of grapes
Near Florence, in the town of Impruneta, the last Sunday of September transforms into a grand celebration: the Feast of Grapes. More than just a tribute to wine, it is a vibrant display of community spirit, the pride of its historic districts, and nearly a century of tradition. Today, it stands as one of the most spectacular and entertaining festivals in Italy.
The highlight is the parade of elaborate wagons, each created by one of the town’s districts. Far from being simple floats, they are true theatrical productions: original stories, scripted and choreographed, all inspired by the grape. Each project is conceived early in the year and perfected over months of passionate preparation: a dazzling expression of creativity, competition, and shared identity.
Lemons in Sorrento
Undoubtedly one of Italy’s most iconic products, perhaps only second to pasta and pizza in symbolic value, the Sorrento lemon, now protected with PGI status, is cherished for its intense aroma and refreshing flavor. More than a fruit, it is a symbol of local identity, even aesthetic, and agricultural tradition. Each year, the Lemon Festival enlivens the charming village of Massa Lubrense, offering guided tours through lemon groves and tastings of local delicacies: the famous Limoncello, jams, and lemon-based desserts. The festivities are further enriched with traditional music, folklore performances, and theatrical shows that celebrate the vibrant heritage of the Sorrento Peninsula (near Naples).
