In the far north-east of Italy is Friuli-Venezia Giulia, one of the country’s most famous winemaking regions. Due to its location it has always been a “borderland” and has been ruled by many different countries and empires over the centuries. Its capital Trieste is an incredible port city enriched by the intermingling of diverse people and cultures.

Milan MXP is the closest international airport. It is 450km from Trieste, the main city Trieste has its own airport which serves the region.

Best time for a trip: ideally from April to October.

What to expect: city tours, culture, wine and grappa tastings, walking in nature.

Trieste’s main square, Piazza Unità d’Italia, features “Habsburg-style” Central European architecture, and is the largest square in Europe that faces the sea.

Around the outskirts of Trieste and further up the Karst Plateau, you can find traditional small taverns called osmize. These are local farms whose owners offer their own homemade wine and products to visitors. Often located in charming vineyards, many of them have spectacular views overlooking Trieste.
