The capital of culture for 2025 will be in the South of Italy!
Agrigento
We are in Sicily, on the southeastern coast, nestled along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. This region is steeped in history, beginning with its founding in 581 B.C. by a Greek colony, whose enduring legacy includes Agrigento‘s renowned “Valley of the Temples.” This vast expanse, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to numerous Doric-style temples, characteristic of ancient Greek architecture. Over the centuries, Agrigento has been shaped by a succession of civilizations. After the fall of Carthage, it was taken by the Romans, followed by the Arabs, who renamed it Kerkent and infused the city with their rich culture. Later, the Normans—descendants of the Vikings—conquered the city, calling it Girgenti, a name it retained until 1927, when it was officially changed to Agrigento.
This city is a mosaic of influences, a testament to its multifaceted history and cultural diversity, where the echoes of ancient civilizations continue to enrich its vibrant present.
Cultural heritage
“The self, the other and nature. Cultural relations and transformations”. Agrigento, alongside the island of Lampedusa, will come together this year to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of Sicily and the profound ways in which humanity has shaped both society and the natural world.
“The area’s rich cultural heritage serves as the driving force behind a diverse cultural offering, enhanced through innovation and promotion. This approach fosters socio-economic development, drawing inspiration from cutting-edge technological concepts.”
The four elements
The events will be thoughtfully curated around themes inspired by Empedocles’ four classical elements: air, water, earth, and fire. Each element will serve as a symbolic thread.
Air, associated with freedom and harmony, will embody the spirit of music. Water, fluid and encompassing, will celebrate the diversity of cultures, fostering connection and understanding across traditions. Earth, a symbol of stability and life, will emphasize sustainability and deep respect for nature. Finally, fire, representing energy and transformation, will ignite the passion of artists, showcasing the intensity and brilliance of their creative expressions.
