The story and tradition behind this dessert
There are many stories about the origins of the Panettone. The most credited one is set at the court of Ludovico il Moro, when once a scullery boy named Toni, in order to fix the cook’s disaster, made up this new recipe for a dessert with butter, eggs, flour and raisins. The guests loved it so much that it was decided to call it “pan di Toni” (bread made by Toni) – that then became Panettone.
Apparently the Panettone dates back to the middle age. This special sweet bread was used to celebrare Christmas in Milan. The Sforza family wanted that at least for one day everyone would be allowed to eat this rich and refined bread, even the poors.
