Panoramic trains you have to try in Italy!

Touristic trains as a new way of traveling and experience a destination

It is not the first time we explored touristic and panoramic trains in Italy, as a perfect example of green and slow travel. The foliage train (the red Bernina express) is the first examples that comes to mind!

But let’s make an official guide on the greatest train routes that allow us to travel from place to place while enjoying incredible views in the meantime! Especially in these cold season, they are indeed a fun alternative to the usual tours, sometimes while also experiencing what was like to travel back in the days aboard historic trains.

The Italian Trans-Siberian Railway

While the Alps are the highest mountains in Italy, perfect for the ski season, the Appenines graces us with spectacular views on gentle hills and valleys. This train route starts near the highest mountains of the Appenines, in the Abruzzo region, and travels south, and follows a tortuous route that crosses mountains, gorges and national parks, offering the traveler a unique spectacle, through the (lesser-known) wonders of Italy. Adedd value is the fact that the train is an historical one from the 1920, and crosses abandoned train stations where time seems to have stopped. A truly magic experience.

Steam train in the Langhe region

What an experience to travel on a steam train in a UNESCO heritage site: from the city of Turin, this train travels the hills of the Langhe region, stopping in some of its most famous sites such as the underground cathedrals, historical wine cellars, or the Canelli castle. This is not a simple train ride: it’s an enograstronomic train ride, that also involves a special lunch with traditional piedmontese food and products. A treat for any passionate foodie!

The Green Train in Sardinia

The Green Train is a unique, unforgettable experience to get to know the most genuine Sardinia in just a few hours. Villages and territories characterized by extraordinary landscapes and natural environments, scents and flavors that have disappeared elsewhere, overwhelm any traveler with deep emotions. This train route has now 5 different itineraries to choose, in different parts of the island: from coastlines, to lakes, from castles to mountains, the wild nature of Sardinia is always astonishing.
