Discover the Italian town of poetry!
This special edition of our journey across Italy looking for street art, brought us all the way at the end of the heel of Italy: the town of Polignano a Mare in Apulia celebrates poetry in all its corners.
Polignano a Mare (=on the sea) is a picturesque town perched on a cliff that descends to the sea. Its little streets, white houses, gentle atmosphere, make for a romantic destination that almost feels unreal. That is how it became an inspirational blank page: its steps, walls, doors are now constellated of short or long verses of beautiful poems.
Let’s discover what moves and inspires Italians and visitors! Here’s some examples:
Mark Twain
The famous writer and professor was once visiting the town of Polignano and said “This place was created before Heaven”. His words are now on a wall in front of the sea
Poem from a local
Guido the Flaneur writes about his town:
Polignano wonderful marine constellation
dominate the sky of my existence.
Here even the words smell of the sea and zephyrs
And the silence
Silence, like dew
It comes down from the sky
Watching our hearts
Sea of Polignano
Giuseppe Parini
The sea, the sun, the silence. The poet Giuseppe Parini writes:
Morning rises in the company of Dawn
before the Sun, which then appears large
on the far horizon, to make you happy
the animals and the plants and the fields
and the waves
