Summer in Italy’s cities can feel intense: soaring temperatures, residents escaping to the coast or the mountains, and many businesses temporarily closing for the holiday season. Yet in recent years, local cultural boards and tourism institutions have transformed summer into one of the most vibrant moments to experience urban life.
Long evenings, warm temperatures, almost no rain, and an increasingly international atmosphere create the perfect setting for open-air concerts, artistic performances, night visits, and cultural festivals that allow both visitors and locals to enjoy the city in a slower, more creative way.
Here’s how the Milan summer is unfolding!
“Enchanted evenings”
From June through September, every Thursday evening the iconic Duomo di Milano transforms into an extraordinary open-air theatre. Against the breathtaking backdrop of the Cathedral’s terraces and marble spires, renowned musicians perform alongside talented students from the Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Verdi di Milano, creating a unique musical experience suspended between art, architecture, and sunset light.
Each Thursday features a different repertoire, ranging from classical masterpieces to contemporary interpretations, with starting times carefully adapted to the changing light of the Milanese sunset.
“Walk among the Spires”
Alongside the performances, special evening guided tours allow visitors to discover the Cathedral and its terraces from a completely different perspective. Among the highlights are the celebrated “Walks Among the Spires,” immersive 60-minute experiences that include elevator access to the rooftop terraces. Accompanied by official guides from the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, guests can explore hidden details, symbols, legends, and fascinating historical anecdotes while admiring panoramic views over the city at dusk.
“Summer in the castle”
The majestic Castello Sforzesco also comes alive during the warmer months with its own celebrated summer festival. From June to September, the castle’s historic courtyards host more than 70 events, transforming the Renaissance fortress into one of the city’s most dynamic cultural stages.
Soloists, ensembles, bands, choirs, and orchestras guide audiences through musical journeys that span genres, traditions, and continents. The programme also embraces artistic contamination, where music meets dance, cinema, theatre, and spoken word performances, creating evenings that are both sophisticated and accessible.
